FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA WINE REGION

The Wine region is made up of rolling fields full of vineyards, dotted with small villages and covers a total of 1,600 hectares. This hill country is superb terrain for relaxing country holidays, in part thanks to the excellent farm holiday facilities.

The DOC wine zone runs almost without a break from east to west, its gentle slopes presenting extensive south-facing areas that are ideal for premium-quality winemaking.

What really distinguishes the region of Friuli from the rest of Italy is its emphasis on quality and its interest in many quirky, indigenous grape varieties, virtually unheard of in other regions. Documentation shows that at the end of the 19th Century there were at least 150 grape varieties grown in Friuli.

IN FRIULI WINE REGION WE RECOMMEND....uva_traminer.jpg

Visit the main cities that are very pretty and each have their own unique feel: Trieste and Udine but above all visit, the small village of Aquileia , UNESCO World Heritage listed for its Roman origins and the largest Paleo-Christian mosaic floor and Cividale with its small medieval centre and the picturesque 15th century Ponte del Diavolo (Devil’s bridge).

The region is a feast of culinary diversity. In the hospitable trattorie (local restaurant) where it is rare to find tourists, one can appreciate the genuine delicious food of different ethnic traditions.
Friuli-Venezia Giulia is home to the prized San Daniele prosciutto and the tasty frico, (fried cheese), as well as salami cooked in vinegar, brovada e muset (cotechino sausage with sliced pomace-steeped turnips), cjarsons (large pasta envelopes), game and trout-based dishes, zlicnjaki, small dumplings made of flour and acquabizna, a turnip and potato soup. Sweets include gubana and struki.
