HONEYMOON IN ITALY

Italy has to be the world’s most romantic place to say your vows and spend your honeymoon and Rome is the ideal place to begin. In the Eternal City, history and romance are everywhere from Michelangelo’s beautiful piazza or viewing the sunset at the lookout over the Roman Forum. Walking is a great way to see and experience the ancient and modern delights of the city and there are many cafés, bars and restaurants for rest and nourishment.

If the thought of an Italian honeymoon is starting to simmer, add the Beautiful Amalfi Coast into the mix. This magnificent coastline consists of steep cliffs dropping into blue, blue ocean and small picturesque fishing villages scattered in clusters along the coast. Their villas, churches and corner shops are built out from the cliff face, on top of each other and climb up the mountain from the water's edge. The views are breathtaking. You can even get away from the tourists on the islands of Capri, Procida and Ischia and spend time in their quaint little villages.

A major ingredient to a romantic Italian honeymoon is Florence, the centre of the Italian renaissance. This beautiful city is a living art gallery and is loaded with unique architecture, and churches abound with works of great artists such as Michelangelo, Titian, Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli. Don’t forget the shopping. With malls, markets and historical arcades, you will have no trouble finding that special honeymoon memento.

It will be difficult leaving Florence but when you do, spend some time exploring the rest of Tuscany and the little villages and hilltop towns that reflect the best of yesteryear. This region offers variety in accommodation from farmstays to restored castles to spa resorts with natural hot springs.

Tuscany goes hand in hand with food and wine. Your honeymoon shots of the two of you dining in a courtyard covered in ancient Wisteria vines, looking out over a view of the ancient vineyards and feasting on local produce and wines will be the envy of everyone back home.

Save the best to last and end your honeymoon in fairy tale Venice. Cars are banned here, so the city is explored on foot or by boat, you decide. It’s your honeymoon so, of course, you choose the gondala to cruise you past palaces, basilicas and 1500-year-old villas.
