ISLAND OF SARDEGNA (SARDINIA)

Sardegna or Sardinia (English version) is like another country in itself. The language dialect is once again unique as it is other parts of Italy like Sicily or Campania. Europeans flock to Sardegna in the summer for its beautiful white beaches, rocky coves and clear crystal waters and it has for a long time been a mecca for the rich and famous in their yachts.

With fishing the main industry supporting Sardegna throughout history, it is no wonder that it is full of harbours and caters to sailors with a large number of marinas.

There are many parts of the island that are relatively untouched by tourism still. It would be wise to seek out these areas to stay away from the tourist masses especially in July. Flights enter Cagliari and from there car hire is recommended and take a week to drive around the island booking a stay in the south and then the north as they are very different.

Sardegna has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic period so the island is an archaeological treasure for those interested and there are stone circles to be seen from the 3rd C B.C called Menhirs. Nuraghi were Neolithic tombs - conical towers in the shape of a beehive, and are found all over Sardegna.

The food and culture of Sardegna is very interesting as well as the cultural dancing and costumes. Try to experience a festival while there as the Sardinian people really know how to enjoy themselves - See Festivals Italy
