Torino (Turin) is located one hour from the mountains and one hour from the sea and it is – in the words of the great architect Le Corbusier – “the city with the most beautiful natural position.”
Turin is well-known also to be the home of the Holy Shroud, occasionally on show in the Duomo (Cathedral), Juventus Football Club and headquarters of Fiat and Lancia automobile manufacturers . Today it’s image has changed from the original, it is more diverse and the city is engaged in a modernization process unrivalled in Italy.
The former Lingotto car factory has been converted to a complex with modern services, cultural venues and a hotel. Every two years In October, Lingotto hosts the “Salone del Gusto”, one of the food and wine sector’s major international events. It provides a venue for conscientious producers to connect with a public increasingly interested in gastronomy and sustainable food production.
The event created by Slow Food, an organization founded in 1986 by Carlo Petrini, is dedicated to excellent food and the extraordinary people who create it, the cultural heritage of agriculture and food production.

Turin is an interesting and multifaceted city, rich in history. Formerly the capital of Italy ruled under the Savoy Kingdom. It is a charming and elegant baroque town, comprised of elegant squares, world class museums and historical cafes (See Turin section under Shopping in Italy), and kilometers of colonnaded walkways.
Turin landscape is dominated by the land mark Mole Antonelliana, now home to the stylish museum of Cinema. At the heart of the town is the S. Carlo Square, linking Via Roma with the splendid Palazzo Reale, Palazzo Madama and the Palazzo of the Science`s Academy, the latter being home to the Egyptian Museum (second in the world for importance only to Cairo’s own museum).
But the real magic of Turin, beside the great numbers of important Museums, Palaces and Exhibitions is that it is a green, well organized and a relatively tourist free city which makes it a great place to experience Italian culture.
